Rehobothers het vroeër dié week 'n voorsmakie gekry van wat hul voorouers op 8 Mei 1915 deurgemaak het toe die Duitse weermag 103 jaar gelede die Basters op Sam Khubis aangeval het.

“Hierdie is 'n ervaring eie in sy soort wat jy net op die terrein kan beleef,” het Jackie Britz van die Sam Khubis-komitee, oor vanjaar se herdenking wat reeds op 1 Mei begin het, gesê. Die nageslag van die dapper helde en heldinne is veronderstel om die Gelofte jaarliks te herdenk en aan God alle eer te bring.

Meer as 'n eeu later, is dit die doel van die Sam Khubis-komitee om hierdie geskiedenis oor te dra, nie net aan die jongmense van Rehoboth nie, maar aan die hele Namibië.

“Ons werk baie hard om te verseker dat dit wat ons aan die jongmense oordra, histories feitlik is en dat die gebeure van toe nie verdraai word vir die agenda van ander nie,” sê Britz.

Volgens hom word die herdenking van die slagveld elke jaar uitgeleef teen die agtergrond van 'n spesifieke tema. “Dit het ten doel om uit te wys wat die rol van elkeen ten opsigte van die rol van die kerk, skool, gesin, vrou en jeug het.”

Die komitee het vanjaar seker gemaak die jeug word behoorlik betrek. “Hulle was vir die hele program verantwoordelik onder die tema; 'God, die gelofte en ek'.”

Vir die Rehobothers is dit die grootse opvoedingstaak, “en opvoeding is 'n proses met geen oornag resep nie,” sê Britz.

Benewens die voorskou wat 04:00 Dinsdagoggend plaasgevind het, was daar ook Maandag 'n kerkdiens en 'n perde-optog gehou.
