Deaths and attempted murder mar capital

A corporal in the Namibian Defence Force at the Suiderhof military base was taken into custody this past weekend after he allegedly shot a man.

The shooting took place after the 32-year old victim bumped the corporal’s car at a shebeen. The victim was shot in the head and is in a critical condition at a local hospital. The suspect was arrested and his firearm confiscated. Police investigations continue.

Two people died in a car accident early on Saturday morning in the capital after the driver lost control of the vehicle, hitting a pole. Another passenger survived the crash but lost his leg and was admitted to hospital. It is alleged the driver was speeding.

A woman was held at gunpoint in her room in Katutura last Friday night and robbed of goods and cash worth N$40 000. She was asleep when two men broke into her room and demanded she cover her face with a blanket. They took almost N$9 000 in cash as well as her television, cameras and cellphone. No arrests have been made and the goods have not been recovered.

A driver was left with slight injuries after a suspect smashed his car’s window at a home in Pionierspark. The suspect grabbed a bag containing official documents and N$30 000 in cash. The victim managed to stop the vehicle and chase the suspect who got into a vehicle and sped off. Three suspects were arrested.

In Okahandja a cyclist died after a truck hit him. The driver of the truck passed the cyclist but hit him with the truck's back wheels.

A Botswana national was arrested in Gobabis after he entered Namibia without declaring his motor vehicle. He appeared in court on Monday.
