Prepayment meters on the cards

This activity is targeted at the homes of pensioners and defaulters, with N$3 million that has been earmarked for the conversion.Credit meters allow residents to use electricity and only pay for it at the end of every month, while prepayment meters allow residents to buy electricity of a desired amount at any time without accumulating additional costs.
“Once the prepayment meters have been installed it will eliminate some of the City’s problems in terms of defaulters,” Windhoek’s mayor Muesee Kazapua said at the meeting.Unfortunately the conversion to prepayment meters is hampered because most defaulters are unable to settle their arrears and households have to settle their outstanding accounts before a conversion can be done.
More than 1 000 pensioners have already registered with the City to convert to prepayment meters, but due to the limited budgetary resources the City will not be able to carry out all the conversions within a year, Kazapua said. – Nampa
