Omaheke’s women’s football team was crowned champion of the 2019 Namibian Football Association (NFA) Galz & Goals Football & Healthy Lifestyle tournament held at the NFA Technical Centre in the capital on Saturday.
The one-day event saw Omaheke beating host region Khomas, 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while the //Kharas Region took the third position.
Omaheke’s goalkeeper, Uetuundja Tjihooreko, was the star player for her team as she stopped two penalty kicks during the shoot-out. She was named best goalkeeper of the tournament, while Joane Simboiya of the //Kharas Region scooped Top Goal Scorer award with four goals, and Michane Vries of the Khomas region was named Best Player and Omaheke’s Jeraldo Eiseb received Best Coach award.
Other awards went to the team from Lüderitz (Healthy Lifestyle), while Ohangwena walked away with Fair Play award. The Best Health Booth Play award went to Physically Active Youth Katutura from Khomas and the Best Galz & Goals Programme Coordinator went to Antoinette from the Erongo Region.
Speaking to Nampa after the match, Omaheke coach Jeraldo Eiseb said it is overwhelming to win such a significant competition where 14 regional teams participated. “Beating the defending champions who are also the hosts, was not an easy task, but we had the composure and determination to win this tournament,” he said.
According to Jackie Gertze from the NFA’s Women’s Desk, the tournament serves as a door-opener for Namibian football players and administrators to prepare themselves for the next level, adding that the tournament’s success factor is the strong team of administrators involved in women’s football in the Khomas region.
She said the next thing is to qualify for international games by instilling and moulding potential into the selected players to represent Namibia. – Nampa
