Take care of yourself

It’s the middle of the year, and by now a lot of us feel overwhelmed, overworked, depressed and stressed.

I found myself in that exact same position, trying to be Wonder Woman. Only to realise that a lot of the small, yet most important things in my life I shifted to the back. I was so focused on trying to make an impact in certain areas of my life (which wasn’t appreciated at all) that I neglected myself, my family and my passions.

We get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of our lives, trying to be the perfect partner, mother, friend, sibling, while at the same time being on top of your game at work or studies, yet we forget the most important thing - you.

The mind is so powerful yet so fragile. I know too many people who are on anxiety medication or antidepressants. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. A few days’ rest with some medication doesn’t cure depression, anxiety or mental breakdowns. Take it slow!

We live in a society where we are constantly bombarded with the latest trends and fashions. We are expected that by 18 you need to know what your career choice is, at 22 you are expected to graduate. Thereafter you need to find a great paying job, buy your car, house, get married and have children, all before you are 30.

You and I both know this is pure BS. (Kudos to those who’ve achieved all that without breaking a sweat.)

When was the last time you got your hair and nails done? When last did you do something for yourself without feeling guilty?

Society expects that you be perfect while juggling 100 things at the same time.

Stop! You are human, not a robot.

Most newspapers are filled with bad news, the economy is not recovering anytime soon, suicides are on the rise - there’s enough bad surrounding us to last a lifetime.

Many times we are so quick to react, judge and criticise, but sometimes you just need to take a moment, breathe and try a different approach.

A simple “are you okay”, “how’s it going”, “I’m sorry” or “I am here for you” can have such an immense impact. Spread some love to others but most importantly yourself.
