Altesame 21 brande is vanaf 27 September tot 7 Oktober in die Windhoek-omgewing aangemeld. Hiervan is tien in voorstede aangemeld en 11 in die buitewyke.
Volgens ’n munisipale woordvoerder, Lydia Amutenya, het die onlangse veldbrande ’n baie groot area verwoes. “Die presiese grootte is in hierdie stadium onbekend, aangesien die operasie nog voortduur en gevolglik kan die omvang daarvan eers daarna bepaal word. Die fokus is nou net om brande te blus.”
Sy het gesê dat klein brande tussen Khomasdal, Dorado Park en Cimbebasia aangemeld is, asook groot brande buite te stad, wat Elisenheim, Döbra, die Erosberge, Kaiser Wilhelm-berg, Satan’s Loch, Daan Viljoen, Heja Lodge, Regenstein en Omeya ingesluit het.
Die stad sal aanhou om voorkomingswenke en voorsorgmaatreëls wat geneem moet word in gevalle van veldbrande, met die publiek deel, het sy gesê.
“Die plantegroei is uiters vlambaar en in hierdie seisoen wanneer dit winderig is, kan brande maklik van die een gebied na die ander versprei, dus is dit belangrik om voorsorgmaatreëls te tref en voorbereid te wees op veldbrande.”
Amutenya het die publiek aangemoedig om hul omgewing skoon te hou, minstens drie meter van hul grense af.
Meer as 2,6 miljoen hektaar regoor die land is reeds sedert die begin van Namibië se brandseisoen in Mei deur veldbrande verwoes.
