JanuWorry is finally done and I believe many of us have listed ‘eat healthier’, ‘lose weight’ or ‘start exercising’ as one of our New Year’s resolutions.

I know I’m guilty, as ‘losing weight’ is the number one thing on my resolutions list.

While I was on leave, I was on the roll. I started cycling again and managed about 2 or 3 kilometres on the first day. Mind you, this was my first time in months on a bicycle. The next day I decided to push my body because I know what it’s capable of. That day I cycled 10 km, the next day 12 km and on the third day I cycled 14 km.

I was extremely proud of myself, and even lost a kilogram or two. I can lose weight so quickly but then again gain it in a jiffy.

But once I started working again, my bicycle is gathering dust in the garage. I keep on telling myself that all I have to do is get on the bicycle and just cycle around the block or something, but I always make up some sort of excuse to not exercise after work. ‘The weather is terrible for cycling’, ‘I still have to cook’, and the most loved excuse of all: ‘I’m too tired’.

I believe some of you may be struggling with the same inner battle as I am now, but I know we’ve got to start somewhere. It’s so much easier to make an excuse and put off exercising or eating healthy, but in the long run it can only benefit us.

I’ve heard so many stories of people battling with heart diseases, cholesterol and diabetes, and it’s no joke. We can’t keep on practicing unhealthy habits and only wake up when the doctor gives us bad news.

I, on the other hand, decided to push myself one day at a time. Namibia Medical Care (NMC) started a 30-day healthy habits challenge and I decided to join. My first task on Monday was to chew slowly and mindfully, and on Tuesday I had to walk 6 000 steps. On Wednesday we had to list five things we are grateful for. And so the list continues.

It might sound silly, but I believe starting small and by getting your mind in the game, will help you achieve your weight or healthy habit goals.
