A place where old and new friends meet

A warm welcome, a smile, a “welcome back” or a hug awaits many that visit Probst Restaurant.

“For some it’s a tradition to come to the restaurant after arriving in town. After 62 years we really do not want to change much and intend to keep the comfort and homely feeling of Probst. Many of our visitors return to experience memories they have from way back,” says Astrid Deetlefs.

The family-owned restaurant, take away and boulevard cafe is situated at No 102 on the corner of Theo-Ben Gurirab Street and 12th Road in Walvis Bay. Willi and Mary Probst arrived from Germany in 1955 and opened the business in 1957 as Willi Probst Bakery and Restaurant. Willi Probst senior was a master baker (Bäcker Meister) and trained his son Willi Jr in the art.

In 1960 Willi and Lilo Probst bought the place and expanded from a 30-seat to a 120-seat restaurant with boulevard cafe. Astrid (daughter of Willi and Lilo) and Fred Deetlefs took over the business in 2002. Their son Willi is the manager, and other children are also involved helping in the family business which employs 32 people.

The establishment offers breakfast, lunch, coffee, drinks, take-aways, cakes and also birthday, wedding and special occasion cakes.

Probst takes bookings, welcomes walk-ins, groups and small birthday groups. Take-aways are prepared fresh on order.

The “Belegte Brötchen” - rolls with different toppings - are always winners and they are renowned for that. The restaurant and take-away opens at 6:30 from Monday to Saturday for breakfast, and lunch is served from 12:00 until 14:30.

Probst also has various traditional German home-cooked meals, such as eisbein served with sauerkraut, schnitzels and goulash, and other dishes like spaghetti bolognaise, calamari, fish, stews, oxtail and curries.

Pies, toasted sandwiches, coffee and cakes are served until 17:30.

For burger eaters, there is a special “All Around the World Burger” menu. The favourite is the “Heart Attack” burger with plenty of spicy cheese sauce. Kids are welcome and can order from the kiddies menu or small portions from most of the meals on the menu.

Come and try real German cheesecake or a mini Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, or just pop in for a coffee and free WiFi.

Probst is closed on Sundays.
