Action packed 5-a side soccer at the coast

Otis Finck - Twenty teams are competing in the 2018 edition of the annually contested Swakopmund Football Club (SFC) 5-A-Side soccer tournament.

The action commenced yesterday with four groups of five teams each vying for bragging rights as League and Social champions at the event in Swakopmund.

SFC A defeated Blunder FC 3-0 in the opening game of the tournament which has become synonymous with loads of goals.

This year’s tournament will produce 56 games, including the respective finals. Players from all walks of life forms and register teams and strut their stuff on the pitch during the event. Teams are adequately supported by locals and fans from afar.

After the group stages, the two top-placed teams advance to the League section and the rest of the teams compete in the Social section of the competition.

The semi-finals and finals of this year’s tournament sponsored by Hunters, Thovo-Therm and Coastal Printers are scheduled for today. The League final will be decided at 13:00 and the Social final at 13:30 at the SFC grounds.

The prize giving is slated for 14:30. Twenty two teams were in action at last year’s tournament. Walvis Bay Boys won the League title, Smart Guys the Cup and Farm Arbeiter the Social Shield competitions.

The SFC Christmas Cup Soccer tournament will be hosted at the same venue from December 27 to 29.
