An outing to remember

Three venues are wrapped into one with the Stellenbosch Wine Bar, Tasting Room and Market.

Gerine Hoff - To celebrate my birthday, the bestest friends in the world took yours truly out to the Stellenbosch Wine Bar & Bistro for a quick lunch last week.

And it was divine!

Except for the awesome company, it is always a treat to visit the restaurant for a meal at the main restaurant or a glass of wine at the Tasting Room next door, or something lighter at the Market. As always, stepping into the courtyard you feel as if you are anywhere except our Namibian capital.

In spite of the fact that it was a Thursday at 14:00 and a scorcher of a day, the seats outside were all taken (does anyone work anymore?! Present company excluded of course…). Thankfully there was lots of (airconditioned) room inside. Once we were comfortably seated and our water (wine) was served by our friendly waiter, we were ready to order mains.

The menu is not large, serving up only around ten main dishes and a variety of steaks, each served with a garden salad, chips, rice, mashed potatoes or seasonal veggies and you have the option to add any one of the sauces available. There are also a number of side dishes to fill up the most hungry among us. For the less hungry, there are a few starters or salads to choose from, or – if you're a sweet tooth – you can go for one of the delicious-sounding desserts.

Foregoing the starters since some of us had to head back to work rather quickly, three of us opted for the Jägerschnitzel served with traditional red cabbage and pan-fried baby potatoes, while the fourth person in our party who is on R&R at the moment (lucky fish), chose a burger. And all four dishes were delicious. The sweetish red cabbage is just the perfect accompaniment for the schnitzel.

Alas, due to time constraints, we had to say no to dessert. But even though we had been there for a little more than an hour, it felt as if we had spent the whole afternoon enjoying each other's company, with delicious food and refreshing wine. All in all, a wonderful way to spend my special day. Thank you!
