AR movement to appeal dismissal

Yolanda Nel – The Affirmative Action (AR) movement suffered defeat last week when the High Court ordered illegal shack dwellers to vacate the property in the 7de Laan informal settlement by 28 April.

Job Amupanda, leader of the AR, said in a statement that they will appeal the judgement. “Once we appeal, it will be temporarily suspended and be of no effect,” the statement read.

According to him they approached the court in search of justice. Their struggle is not confined to the court but they are merely doing whatever they can to restore the dignity of the people with the little they have.

The lawfulness of the municipality’s actions will be heard in court on 26 April.

A Windhoek resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, commented on the whole ordeal. “Even if the shack owners are guilty, what right does the municipality or the police have to destroy the material used to build the shack? It is their property and was not handled with respect,” he said.

The dispute started after the municipality demolished shacks that were allegedly built three years ago.
