Blood donors celebrated

19 November 2019 | Local News

The Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS) recently awarded milestone donors who have showed continued commitment in helping save lives through the altruistic act of donating blood at the annual general meeting held in Windhoek.
Remarking on the preceding year, NamBTS chairman, Deputy Judge President Hosea Angula said he was pleased with the operations of the service over the period. “The Oshakati branch is doing well with new donor panels being established; the coastal branch is going strong; the headquarters are doing well; and the clinics are running smoothly. I can, without hesitation, say we had another successful year.”
Among the highlights of the event was the recognition award given to Klaus Spethmann who has donated blood about 250 times. Spethmann holds the record for the most blood donations made by a single donor in the country and made his milestone donation on World Blood Donor Day earlier this year.
A number of donors who reached milestones of 50, 75, 100,125, 150, 175, 200 and 225 blood donations were also honoured with recognition certificates at the event.
With only a little over 1% of the Namibian population donating blood every year, NamBTS has seen a steady growth in donations over the past few years.
However, the organisation experiences shortages during the festive season and Angula urged donors to donate regularly, especially leading up to the festive period.
The service thanks all blood donors who have taken time to help save lives countrywide. Your efforts have been instrumental in improving the wellbeing of thousands of fellow Namibians.
Those interested in becoming a blood donor should be older than 16 years, weigh more than 50kg, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and enjoy general good health.
