Christmas lunch for Windhoek’s elderly

17 December 2018 | Government

Windhoek’s mayor last week hosted a Christmas lunch for the city’s elderly residents at the Katutura multipurpose centre field.

Speaking at the event, mayor Muesee Kazapua said that, “This is the time of the year when we reflect on the needs of the elderly, who at times feel very alone especially for those with no family ties in the city. It was therefore against this background that my office decided to organise this event.”

He said that the event is a gesture of “our appreciation of the value they have brought to our community and society. We want to reassure our elder residents that we are proud of them and that we care for them.”

Kazapua said as the city fathers they continue to review their existing policies, with the main aim of making them more pro-social, particularly to pensioners. “As a result of this change in our strategic thinking, Council wrote off N$191 million in debts owed to the city by pensioners in June,” he said. He added that Council commenced with the installation of pre-paid electricity meters in Windhoek, giving priority to pensioners in the north and north-western suburbs of the city.

He reiterated that the City would continue rendering a free of charge public transport service to pensioners and other vulnerable groups, and that they continue to raise awareness against the abuse of elders.

Apart from the lunch, councillors also handed food hampers to the elders as selected by their respective constituency councillors.

Organisations and companies who contributed to the event include the Chinese Embassy (N$50 000), FNB (N$50 000), Nedbank (N$50 000), ARK Trading Industries (500 tins of canned fish), OK Franchise (300 cooldrinks and 300 bottles of water), Namibia Breweries (300 cooldrinks), and Pick n Pay (400 tins of canned fish).
