City changes 13 street names

The City of Windhoek (CoW) held a mass street renaming ceremony on Wednesday, to honour some of the fallen sons and daughters of the country, with 13 streets being renamed.
“We are aware that we cannot honour them enough, as there is simply no price we can pay for the contributions they made to our society,” said mayor Muesee Kazapua at the event.
This message was confirmed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Prof Peter Katjavivi, who added that with the street renaming, tribute is paid to a number of Namibians who played an instrumental role in the development of the country before and after independence. “We recall their selfless contributions to our country and rejoice that the memory of them will be engraved in the names of these streets,” he said.
The 13 Namibians who are honoured are protestor Shikongo Gabriel Nuunyango, Alderman Matheus Kristof Shikongo, Professor Mburumba Kerina, Comrade Tsukhoe //Gowases, Judge Johannes Karuaihe, Reverend Paulus //Gowaseb, businessman and community leader Ivako Kapuuo, Reverend Bartholomew Karuaera, Evangelist Mika Kaiyamo, Reverend Erwin Tjirimuje, Commander Simeon Lineekela Kambo Shixungileni, Comrade Festus Lazarus and Deon Heunis de Wet, a little boy who passed away after a venomous zebra snake bite.
The affected streets are as follows:
Penning Street (Katutura) now Shikongo Nuunyango Street
Lazarus Street (Katutura) now Festus Lazarus Street
Bahnhof Street (Windhoek) now Mburumba Kerina Street
Ranonkel, Begonia and Rooivalk Streets (Khomasdal) now Tsukhoe //Gowases Street
Dan Close (Elisenheim) now Deon Heunis Close
Lüderitz Street (Windhoek) now Judge JP Karuaihe Street
Julius Nyerere (Okuryangava) now Rev Paulus //Gowaseb Street
Eneas Nanyemba (Katutura – Freedom Square), now Ivako Kapuuo Street
Ceaser Street (Wanaheda) now Rev. BG Karuaera Street
Dorp Street (Katutura) now Ev Mika Kaiyamo Street
Lucifer and Legioen Streets (Katutura) now Rev. Erwin Tjirimuje Street
Bismarck Street (Windhoek) now Simeon Shixungileni Street
