All Stars Top Eight tourney starts on Friday

21 November 2019 | Sports

The first edition of the All Stars Top Eight football competition starts at the Khomasdal Stadium in Windhoek on Friday.
The tournament, held under the auspices of the Namibia Rural Sport Development Federation (NRSDF), sees football teams from Otjombinde, Ovitoto, Omongua, Otjinene, Okondjatu, Gam, Epukiro and Okotjituuo competing.
A member of the organising committee, Ngatuuane Hange, said the tournament is a year-end competition for the teams that performed well in recent NRSDF competitions. “As you know, the premier league is not active so we want to keep the community busy with our rural sports competition and end the year together.”
He added that due to the high cost of hosting both netball and football matches, they opted for football only. “We do not have sponsors and it will be difficult to accommodate both sport codes at the same time.”
The federation put aside N$10 000 to be shared among the winning teams. He said that N$5 000, a trophy and 20 gold medals was up for grabs for the winners, while the runners-up would pocket N$2 500 and 20 silver medals. An amount of N$1 250 will be shared by the two semi-final losers.
The first game kicks off at 18:00 on Friday, with Omongua and Otjombinde taking to the pitch, followed by Otjinene against Ovitoto, and Epukiro and Gam. Okotjituuo and Okondjatu will play the last game on Friday.
The finals only take place on 27 November at 12:00 at the Khomasdal Stadium due to the unavailability of the stadium on Saturday and Sunday. – Nampa
