The Side by Side Early Intervention Centre hosts a potjiekos competition this weekend in an effort to raise funds for the program to continue. “We need to raise N$190 000 to keep going until February next year,” says Huipie van Wyk of the organization.
The potjiekos competition takes place at the Action Arena in Windhoek on Saturday, and teams are invited to enter their best pot by Wednesday. Entry fees are N$4 000 for a team of six.
As part of this community get together, the Miss Cowboy 2019 pageant takes place at the same event. Participation in the pageant costs N$350, with all proceeds going towards Mia-Lee’s stem cell treatment. “Mia-Lee has Hydrocephalus and because of that, she has a developmental delay and some neurological problems,” Huipsie says. “Stem cells increase her chances of a comfortable life and a reasonable outcome with all her therapy support.
“Side by Side supports all children with special needs and their families. We allowed this platform for Mia-Lee’s family to raise extra funds to achieve the goal,” Huipie says.
The community is invited to join in the fun as from 12:00 on Saturday (12 October). Costs to enter the premises is N$50 for adults and N$25 for children. “We will end the day with a traditional barnyard dance,” she says. Tickets for this cost N$50.
Potjiekos entry forms can be obtained from Huipie at [email protected] To enter the pageant, send an email to [email protected]
“We need the support of Namibia to continue our work,” Huipie concludes.
