The ICS is designed to enable firefighters to effectively and efficiently manage disaster operations and emergency response. Through 40 years of use in the United States and several other parts of the world, the system has proven to be an effective and economical means to bring order to chaos by integrating facilities, equipment procedures and communications within a common organisational structure.
Since the first workshop in August 2016, approximately 100 personnel from the Windhoek Emergency Management Division, as well as private individuals, have benefitted from the specialised training.
Windhoek Fire Department station officer for training fire & rescue Immanuel Tsowaseb, says that since the ICS was adopted and adjusted for the Namibian environment, their department is better able to tackle disasters.
Using a recent fire incident as an example, Tsowaseb explained that firefighters who completed the training, were able to arrange themselves according to the ICS guidelines, while also guiding firefighters who did not undergo the training.
“Everyone knows their task by heart, which significantly boosts confidence,” Tsowaseb said, lauding the USFS instructors for their professional training.
