Football team aims for top spot

The u.20 national football team is aiming for gold att his year's African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Games taking place in Gaborone from 3 to 18 December.According to national football team manager Cole Mungendje, they have called up a strong squad for the competition.“In 2014 in Bulawayo, we finished third at the games; we are going for gold this year. We still have some of the players who competed in Zimbabwe whom we believe will use that experience to win us games in Botswana,” he said.The football players called up are Pascual Kambinda Matende, Erastus Ambambi, Promise Gurirab, Thomas Bantam, Mandema Kudumo, Steven Damaseb, Danzel Narib, Prins Tjiueza, Tyrin Hans Jnr George, Jarule Awaseb, Gonzales Tsuseb, Ikuaterua Mungendje, Ndjiharine Katjivena, Penouua Amazing Kandjii, Edmar Ronaldo Kamatuka, Xavier McClune, Zander McClune and Uaandjua Kurangera.Apart from football, Namibia also competes in nine other sports codes.A group of 152 athletes were selected during the Namibia Sports Commission Youth Games held in the capital earlier this year. They will now compete in athletics, para-athletics, boxing, judo, netball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, football (male and female) and basketball (male).Team Namibia ended sixth overall with 40 medals at the 2016 games held in Luanda, where local athletes collected five gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze medals. – Nampa
