Freddy brings home gold

17 December 2018 | Sports

Namibian karateka Freddy Mwiya brought home a gold medal in Kumite from the 9th Commonwealth Karate Championships that took place in Durban, South Africa, recently.

He also took bronze in the Kata, while his team mates Ané Olivier, Requelle Rickerts, Carlo Amia, Suzelle Pronk and Stefan van der Merwe, won bronze medals in their respective Kumite categories.

The tournament, which consisted of both the Commonwealth Cup (u.14, veterans and masters divisions) and the Commonwealth Championships (cadets, juniors, u.21 and seniors), attracted 936 contestants from 13 countries who, along with the Namibian team of 43 athletes, competed over the course of the four-day event.

Since its inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games, there has been tremendous growth in karate worldwide and to many the Commonwealth Karate Championships are seen as one of the highest platforms for elite level karate participation.

In May next year, Namibia plays host to the AUSC Region 5 Karate Championships.
