Get your hands on Orner's Mavala!

The novel is set just after independence in 1990, at Goas, a Catholic farm school near Karibib. Larry Kaplanski, a young American volunteer, lands at Goas to teach English and History. Trapped at Goas along with a variety of eccentric characters, 'Kaplansk' becomes part of a close-knit group of teachers. Little escapes his observant but comically non-judgmental eye. The title character, Mavala Shikongo, is a disaffected ex-freedom fighter who can take an AK-47 apart in 17 seconds and has 'gravity-defying' balance in stiletto heels.
The subject of much unrequited desire, she is silent about her past, and enigmatic about the future. The book has been translated into French, Italian, German and Dutch and Unam Press is proud to make it available in Namibia.
Orner taught literature at Unam between 2017 and 2018 and is currently Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College in the USA.
