Happydu makes its debut

Volleyball for the youth

18 September 2019 | Sports

The first Happydu youth volleyball tournament – which the organisers hope to make an annual event – takes place at the Katutura Youth Complex this weekend.
The tourney starts Friday with the semi-finals and finals scheduled for Saturday.
The event is organised and sponsored by the Happydu Volleyball Club, consisting mainly of youth from Katutura and targets boys and girls between 13 and 17 years old.
In an interview with Nampa, Happydu head coach Aloisius Ishitile said a number of schools have shown interest in participating, with nine schools from Khomas and one from Erongo already having registered to take part. He said the aim is to develop volleyball at youth level as the club feels youth volleyball is sidelined.
“Most people focus on senior volleyball teams but if we could focus on youth right now, we will have better volleyball players in the future,” Ishitile said, adding that the tournament is also an opportunity for young people to unite and have fun while building their volleyball careers.
Ishitile said although many players are expected to be new to the game, strict rules of play will be observed to ensure that they leave with the necessary knowledge of the rules.
Despite the lack of sponsorship, he said the growth of volleyball in the country is pleasing. “During my short time that I have been a volleyball coach, I have toured the country and observed that many people are now playing it compared to when I was young,” he said.
