In a media statement by Earthlife chairperson Bertchen Kohrs, the marches with banners and singing of slogans are meant to force lawmakers to act on climate change.
She said the first march in Namibia took place on 15 March this year when learners in their respective towns and villages joined other children marching globally. “Children of more than 30 countries worldwide began to protest outside their parliaments and on 15 March 2019, people in more than 110 countries from all continents including Namibia took to the streets, chanting ‘up to here and no further’. They demanded from their governments and international community not to sacrifice the future to short-term interests,” Kohrs said.
She said school children from Namibia, instead of attending classes on Fridays, must take to the streets to demand action to prevent further climate change. Kohrs explained that effective climate protection is inevitable and will be expensive, therefore each state must decide how much of its gross national product could be contributed and what it can do to protect the environment.
Emissions have increased in many countries, industrial nations must be the trendsetters in climate protection, she continued. “The irony of climate change is that its impact affects mostly those who have contributed the least to global warming, the health safety and wellbeing of millions of people around the globe have already been harmed by climate change,” she said.
