Here's to new beginnings

13 August 2018 | Columns

Barry de Klerk – Change is not always an easy thing, but sometimes it is necessary to create room for growth and new experiences.

I recently made a choice to try something new and to leave behind everything I know for a new experience. It was not an easy decision and I know that a part of me might regret it. But at the same time I know it was the right thing to do. I had to do something that will eventually make me happy.

The most important thing is that I made a choice that is better for my future and I know the consequences it might have. When you make the decision to create a new beginning, you really have to think it through carefully. And it took me months to think it all through.

I had to get advice from a different place, because somehow I knew I could never just jump right into it.

I recently read something that made me realise that if you keep waiting to be ready to take a next step, then you might wait for the rest of your life. Sometimes, after really thinking about your next step, it is better to just take a leap of faith and do what you know has to be done. Follow your heart and just hope for the best.

But you have to be sure you are passionate about what you are about to do and that you are doing it because it is something you truly love. We have to be selfish sometimes when we need personal growth and when we want to build experience.

The thing about new beginnings is you have to leave behind people and things you care for and that is usually what makes the choice so hard. You have to make sure everyone understands why you are making the choice and what led you there.

That is exactly what I did and yet I am still scared, but excited. A few years from now I know I will look back and realise that everything works out the way God needs it too. Risks and faith go hand in hand and that is probably why it might worry you.

Fear and worry will always keep holding you back, but at some point holding onto comfort will be more tiring than moving forward. I know now that this is the right time for me to make a new start and to move forward with what I have always been dreaming of.
