Neil Somers heading to Henties

Musician Neil Somers is one of the many South Africans performing at this year's Henties Festival taking place on 23 and 24 August.

Six years after his first album, Somers is back with a brand new album, Hierdie Hande, which is making its mark in the music world. His deep voice is the perfect match for every soulful lyric. The singer, with his soothing velvet voice, needs no introduction: Over the past few years, his work has not only been honoured with various Tempo nominations, but hits like “Anderkant Atlantis” and “Sinnelose Lente” have also been well received by radio stations and the public.

The new album boasts 13 original cuts and is the perfect combination of heart-warming lyrics and light-hearted tunes. “Eendag op 'n Reëndag”, the newly released single, is already a favourite among listeners in his native South Africa.

Somers has been singing since he can remember, having been a member of the Hoëveld Children's Choir. He began making a name for himself in 2003 when his mother enrolled him for a singing competition in Jeffrey's Bay. He won the competition and then finally realized that his future was in music and not in civil engineering, which he was studying at that time.

He stopped his studies, started working as a bartender, and began performing in restaurants. It was here that his road crossed with songwriter Kobus Bezuidenhout, who later became the main lyricist of his debut album.

Because Somers wanted more experience in the music industry, he moved to Pretoria and sang in various clubs, bars and restaurants until he was invited to perform at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in 2007. There, Adam Tas heard one of his songs and wanted to record it himself, which later helped Somers release his first record deal.

Since then he has shared the stage with some of SA's biggest artists including Koos Kombuis, Dozi, Theuns Jordaan, Robbie Wessels, Bok van Blerk, Lianie May, Hugo, Kurt Darren and others.
