Olaf Palme garden blooms

05 August 2018 | Local News

The City of Windhoek established the Olaf Palme Community Garden at the eponymous school some time ago and now they can finally reap what they sowed. Currently volunteers tend to the garden along with the school.

The municipality recently donated some of the garden's produce to the community, having harvested 70 bags of 500g spinach and sweetcorn. These items were then handed over to the community by city officials.

Principal of the school, Julia Hangula, accompanied them. She said they were delighted with the produce, because she has a love for gardening. She said the vegetables and fruit will go a long way in benefitting the community.

Manager of social welfare at the CoW, James Kalundu, said the garden has been operating for about three years, adding that the vegetables are given clean water, making it suitable for human consumption.

He shared the future plans for the area, which may include fishing aquaculture, which will complement the gardening initiative and nutritional supplements for the community.

Fruit trees have also been planted in the garden and they expect that these will soon start carrying fruit to give even more fresh produce to the community.
