Oom Basil plant dat die biesies bewe

Wanneer dit kom by plante, staan hierdie pensioenaris vir niks terug nie.

Oom Basil Paris is ’n pensioenaris van Rehoboth wat glo hy is die eerste Namibiër wat ’n pynappel geplant het wat nou ’n vrug opgelewer het.

Pynappelplante groei gewoonlik net in tropiese areas en Rehoboth – en die grootste gedeeltes van Namibië – is alles behalwe.

En hoe het die vrug van sy arbeid geproe? “Vreeslik lekker soet,” vertel die 72-jarige oom Basil met smaak. “Eintlik was dit ’n probeerslag. Ek is baie lief vir plante. Ek het ook al ’n paar grenadella’s geplant wat al gedra het,” sê hy.

Maar dis die pynappel waarmee hy op die oomblik spog. “Die plant het om en by drie jaar gevat om te dra,” vertel hy. “Ek het ook al met ’n appelpit ’n boom aan die groei gekry, my wingerd loop uit en my avokadopere lyk goed.”

Laasgenoemde het natuurlik baie beskerming nodig, veral in die winter.

Nog ’n liefde was sy mango-boom. “Ek het dit sewe jaar mooi opgepas, elke jaar met ’n gazebo teen die winterkoue beskerm en toe skielik kom die ryp, en die plant het dit nie oorleef nie.”

Ten spyte van ’n paar terugslae, sê oom Basil is die lekkerste vir hom om te sien hoe sy plante groei. “Ek het ongelukkig té laat uitgevind ek het groen vingers, anders sou ek vroeër ’n kwekery begin het!” sê hy.

En met sy opbrengs?

“Ek verkoop dit. Ek gee ook nie om om ander mense se plantjies te pamperlang nie. Bring dit na my en twee weke later kan jy dit kom haal,” sê hy. Daarvoor vra hy net ’n klein bedrag vir die pot waarin die plantjie groei.

Hy plant gewoonlik alles in potte. “Want as jy dit in die grond sit, raak dit baie warm en hulle hou nie daarvan nie. Boonop is die potte gerieflik omdat die plantjie ringwortels ontwikkel en kan ek dit maklik in ’n groter pot oorplant.”

Maar terug na die pynappel. “Die eerste jaar was daar net een vrug. Daarna vyf. En hierdie jaar het die plant drie koppe opgelewer. Wanneer die oorspronklike plant kleintjies kry, moet jy dit versigtig oorplant. Maar die koppe tussen die blare moet jy glad nie aanraak nie,” deel hy sy raad.
