Pack your bags and a picnic basket

The car is packed and this time you remembered your sleeping bag. Nothing will spoil this long awaited camping trip.

Then your wife reminds you that she is also on holiday and what you are going to make for the next meal?

Luckily Safari Food Solutions (SFS) can help. “SFS is an online shop where we provide meal options as well as general camping groceries,” says Mimi Nel of the newly launched initiative.

According to her and partner Lizelle, the meals are partially prepared which means that you get the exact amount of ingredients to prepare the meal. Where possible and practical, they prepare some of the ingredients like combining all the spices in a sachet.

“The aim was to simplify camp cooking and optimise packing space. We try to vacuum pack certain ingredients to save space and only provide enough ingredients to be used for its recipes. This way you don't drive around with unused food and it limits wastage,” the team says.

There are about 30 meals to choose from. “Currently the menus are more suited to the overseas traveller, but Namibians can contact us if you want something different,” Mimi says.

They don't limit the amount of meals ordered but do advise clients to order according to their packing, fridge and freezer space.

Due to the increase of specific dietary requirements, they try to provide meals that can be adjusted to suit various needs. Mimi says that as keen campers themselves, they often see and meet other travellers who struggle to come up with simple yet tasty food while camping.

Often travellers are intimidated by shop choices and limited packing space while many Namibians do not want to camp simply due to the perceived effort involved. “Our tourism sector is one of the countries' biggest assets and should be utilised to the fullest. This includes the local travelling market,” she says.

Although the Safari Food Solution website was launched in January, the team has been researching and menu planning for more than a year.

Orders can be made directly online via www.safarifoodsolutions.com and all meals come with a simple recipe. “Once you have ordered, we will send a quote to be approved. From there the meal kits and other supplies will be packed for collection.”
