Probiotika vir braaikuikens

'n Probiotikum vir braaikuikens, met die mikrobioom van vrylopende hoenders as grondslag, is suksesvol ontwikkel en gepatenteer deur 'n PhD- student in mikrobiologie by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se Fakulteit Natuurwetenskappe.

Deon Neveling, wat sy doktorsgraad by die US se Desember-gradeplegtigheid ontvang, sê 'n mens moet letterlik “sterk staan” om hierdie tipe navorsing te kan doen.

Boonop moet jy ook dikvellig wees en probeer om almal wat 'n eiertjie te lê het oor die stank van jou werkstasie, te ignoreer! “Maar op die ou end was my kollegas omtrent die hoenders in vir my en moes ek maar my navorsing na 'n klein kamertjie in die verste hoek van die JC Smuts-gebou skuif,” lag hy. Volgens sy studieleier, prof. Leon Dicks, is dit die eerste keer dat 'n probiotikum vir braaikuikens ontwikkel word wat berus op die dermkanaalmikrobioom van vrylopende, gesonde hoenders. “Dit wil sê: 'n probiotikum vír hoenders, afkomstig ván hoenders,” skerts hy.



Soeke na mikrobes

Maar hoe kry jy die mikrobes wat in vrylopende hoenders se dermkanaal hou, in die hande?

Deon verduidelik dat hy die weggooibinnegoed afkomstig van die geslagte vrylopende hoenders van Mariendahl, die universiteit se proefplaas, versamel het. Dit het hy dan tot 'n vloeistof verpulp en oor 'n paar honderd petribakkies versprei.

Sodra die bakterieë begin groei het, het hy enkelkultuurkwekings geïsoleer en die spesies geïdentifiseer – voorwaar 'n arbeidsintensiewe proses.

Na verloop van agt maande het hy daarin geslaag om ses voordelige bakteriële spesies te identifiseer – elkeen uit 'n baie spesifieke gedeelte van die dermkanaal.

Bogenoemde bakterieë is toe aan 'n reeks toetse onderwerp ten einde te verseker dat hulle aan probiotikavereistes voldoen. Die volgende stap was 'n toets om vas te stel of dit veilig is as voerbymiddel. Laastens moes die probiotikum sy staal toon ten opsigte van sy vermoë om die insidensie van Salmonella onder braaikuikens te verminder.

Probiotika vs antibiotika

Deon verduidelik dat daar wêreldwyd 'n tendens is om eerder probiotika, in plaas van antibiotika te gebruik om die gesondheid en oorlewingskoers van braaikuikens te verbeter.

“In die Europese Unie is die gebruik van antibiotika in veevoer om groei te bevorder, byvoorbeeld verbied.

Dit is gedoen in 'n poging om natuurlike seleksie vir antibiotikaweerstandige patogene te beheer en te verseker dat die antibiotika wat tans op die mark is, effektief bly in die behandeling van infeksies by mens en dier.”

Die byvoeging van probiotika tot braaikuikenvoer is egter nog ver van alledaagse kommersiële implementering.

Dít is hoofsaaklik toe te skryf aan 'n gebrek aan diepgaande kennis van die komplekse dinamika van die pluimveedermkanaal, en die magdom faktore wat die doeltreffendheid van probiotika beïnvloed.

Deon sê die volgende stap sal wees om iemand te kry om te belê in die grootskaalse toetsing van sy nuutontwikkelde probiotikum. En dan hoop hy om eendag 'n Suid-Afrikaanse maatskappy te stig wat diereprobiotika vervaardig.
