Pucks take flight

The ultra-competitive Bank Windhoek National Indoor Hockey League (NIHL) starts tomorrow (Friday, 7 February 2020), with 32 men’s and 31 women’s teams contending for accolades.
These teams are competing for bragging rights in five different leagues, namely the Premier, Premier Reserve, First, Second, and a Junior U/14 League – a new addition to the league format.
“The Namibia Hockey Union (NHU) is excited to have established the Junior U/14 League in this format at club level for the first time in its history,” said NHU’s president, Marc Nel.
The league will host Windhoek fixtures at the DTS Sports Hall, Windhoek show grounds and the Wanderers (WAP) Indoor Hockey Hall, while Swakopmund stages the coastal matches at The Dome.
The NHU thanked Bank Windhoek for sponsoring both the indoor and outdoor leagues for the sixth consecutive year. “The support and trust that Bank Windhoek has given Namibian hockey, is valued and we are proud to be associated with such a reputable wholly-owned Namibian financial institution,” Nel said.
According to Bank Windhoek’s André le Roux, they are just as proud to be associated with NHU. “Their superior management of the sport has seen it grow to remarkable heights. The positive results of both the Indoor and Outdoor leagues are reflected in Namibia's representation on an international level where local players have excelled and made the country proud. Bank Windhoek wishes all participating teams the best during this year's indoor season.”
The 2020 Indoor Hockey encompasses more than 200 games during the next 2 ½ months in Windhoek and Swakopmund. “The public is encouraged to come in numbers and support their teams during this exciting league,” Nel said.
Final fixtures for the Bank Windhoek National Indoor Hockey take place on Sunday, 5 April 2020.
