Quick bites for every taste

Early in the morning or late in the evening, Bean Tree caters for all tastes.

Windhoek • Gerine Hoff
Before the usual Saturday morning rush began, we recently headed to the Bean Tree Coffee Shop at The Grove Mall's SuperSpar at to get a head start on the day.

Because we were there so early, we had no problem finding seats – something that changed very quickly in the 15 minutes after we sat down.

Once settled, our friendly waitress brought us each a menu and took our drink orders. Here you will find wonderful wake-me-up coffee, cappuccino, lattes, juices, smoothies and milkshakes, along with sparkling wine and a small selection of beer – the latter two to either kick-starting your day, to relish while enjoying lunch with the girls, or if your day has just become too long!

The menu features a good variety of light meals (brötchen and toasts), bigger breakfasts and pizzas along with “telleressen” – i.e. a full plate of food for those who have a serious hole to fill, and even sushi. If you don't have time to sit down, all the meals can also be taken to go.

Along with serving our drinks (thank goodness for a strong cup of coffee!), our waitress took our food orders: A simple toast with cheese for my son, a chicken mayo toastie for me, pizza for my daughter and smoked pork neck on a brötchen for the hubster.

After digging in, we started playing a game: What do each of us score our meal?

My son says his toasted cheese gets a solid 10. Okay, you can't really go wrong with just cheese. My daughter, whose cheese was literally dripping off her pizza, also scored hers a 10. She couldn't finish it, so thankfully she was sorted for lunch as well. I gave my toastie an 8, because there was too little pineapple in the shredded chicken and a small piece of cartilage that I could have done without, but thankfully did not spoil the meal. Hubby gave his brötchen an 8, because who would rather have liked it unsmoked, but in all fairness, he got what he ordered!

To sum up, at Bean Tree you will get you good food at a good price, along with awesome opening hours: Weekdays from 07:00 to 20:00 and from 07:00 to 19:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. What more could you ask for?
