Rolprente laat die geld inrol

Na vreeslike bohaai oor ’n banier in Walvisbaai met die woorde “Welcome to Saudi Arabia” vir ’n internasionale rolprentreeks wat plaaslik geskiet word, het Caillin Basson, voorsitter van die Filmmakers Association of Namibia (FAN), gesê die film het honderde werksgeleenthede vir plaaslike inwoners geskep.
Volgens haar is die filmbedryf een wat alle ander bedrywe raak.
“Wanneer jy ’n produksie na Namibië bring of wanneer jy mense moet invlieg, moet jy vir hulle werksvisums kry, jy moet hulle rondry, jy moet hulle huises, jy moet hulle kos gee, daar is mediese uitgawes ... dit alles [inkomste] kom dadelik die land binne,” het Basson gesê.
Namibië is geïdentifiseer as ’n uitstekende bestemming vir rolprente vanweë sy natuurlike landskap.
“Namibië was nog perfek vir buite opnames, wat beteken filmvervaardigers hou daarvan om hierheen te kom vir ons liggings, ons omgewing, ons duine, die see, die Maanlandskap … Daar is soveel verskillende landskappe in een land wat ’n enkele rolprent toelaat om al hierdie verskillende dinge te skiet, in plaas daarvan om in baie ander lande verfilming te gaan doen. Dit is wat Namibië uniek maak,” het sy gesê.
Plaaslike produksiemaatskappye trek ook groot voordeel uit internasionale produksies, het Basson gesê.
“As ’n filmproduksie na Namibië kom en hulle het ’n begroting van N$100 miljoen, kan daardie geld voordelig vir die ekonomie wees; gegewe die huidige situasie in terme van ons beleide, ons regulasies, sal ’n gedeelte daarvan egter die land verlaat.
“Maar die voordeel is reeds daar. Ons het dit gesien deur reuseproduksies soos ‘Flight of the Phoenix’, ‘Beyond Borders’ en ‘Mad Max’. Die hoeveelheid geld wat in die land bestee is, die voordeel vir die plaaslike [produksie] maatskappye, was enorm,” het sy gesê.
Sy het ’n beroep op die regering gedoen om internasionale produksies aan te moedig omdat daar reeds ’n groot aptyt is om in Namibië skietwerk te doen.
