Indien Windhoekers nie binnekort hul water gebruik gaan verminder nie, gaan die stad 'n reuse waterkrisis in die gesig staar.

Huishoudelike waterverbruikers word gemaan om nie meer as 90 liter water per dag per persoon te gebruik nie, voor nóg strenger waterbeperkings in plek gestel sal moet word.

Volgens die skakelbeampte van die Windhoekse stadsraad, Lydia Amutenya, is die doel om 10% water te bespaar. “Maar sedert Januarie vanjaar word sowat 13% meer water verbruik as wat toelaatbaar is,” het sy gesê.

Dit beteken elke Windhoeker gebruik tot 101.7 liter water per dag.

Die stadsraad het reeds in Augustus verlede jaar 'n watertekort aangekondig wat volgens die droogte monitor-indeks (DMI) 'n 10% waterbesparing vereis.

Indien inwoners nie saamwerk om water te bespaar nie, kan die hoofstad in 'n erge-droogte kategorie geplaas word, wat 15% se waterbesparings tot gevolg gaan hê.

“Die stad se water kan uitgeput raak indien ons nie nou water spaar nie.

Boonop is die munisipaliteit se noodbronne reeds in gebruik, wat op die lange duur 'n ernstige effek gaan hê,” het Amutenya gesê.

'n Windhoek huishouding met twee mense het per week 1 260 liter tot hul beskikking.

Volgens 'n infografiek van die Wes-Kaapse regering, oor hoe om met 50 liter water 'n dag te oorleef, word 10l per persoon per dag gebruik om te stort, 9l wanneer 'n toilet gespoel word en 2l om tande te borsel en hande te was.

Drie liter water word uitgehou om te drink, terwyl 1l gebruik word om te kook.

Die meeste water word gebruik wanneer wasgoed in 'n masjien gewas word, wat tot 70l water per bondel gebruik. Sowat 9l water word gebruik om skottelgoed te was en 5l om die huis skoon te maak.

Dié syfers kan verder aangepas word om nog meer water te spaar, deur semi-gesuiwerde water te gebruik om toilette te spoel en waterlose produkte vir wanneer die huis skoongemaak word.

Tog is die gebruik van semi-gesuiwerde water in Windhoek onwettig sonder die skriftelike toestemming van die stadsraad.

Volgens 'n media berig van 2016, was inwoners woedend oor 'n kennisgewing in die koerant waarin geskryf was: “Semi-gesuiwerde water speel 'n kritiese rol om drinkwater aan die stad te verskaf en daar is onderliggende gesondsheidsrisikos wanneer semi-gesuiwerde waterstelsels sonder enige toesig gekoppel word,” lui die berig.

Volgens Amutenya moet inwoners eerder vir korter tye stort en nie bad nie en enige lakkasies moet onmiddellik aandag kry. “Watermeters moet weekliks nagegaan word om watergebruik te monitor,” het sy gesê.
