Stakeholders and sport officials gathered in the capital on Thursday night to witness the launch of the 2019 Sport Expo aimed at uniting men and women in the sport sector while bringing together government, sponsors, athletes, businesses and fans.
The sports ministry, in conjunction with the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), will host the expo in September, where service providers from across the country will exhibit their products.
The keynote speaker at the launch was Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, who stood in for President Hage Geingob.
Sport minister Erastus Uutoni, who is the patron of the expo, praised everyone that made an effort to support the expo. “When I came up with this plan, I doubted that it would materialise. But thanks to a dedicated team and companies, we are officially launching the expo. I am also honoured to be chosen as the patron and proud to be part of such an historic event.”
Various government officials and businesses pledged financial support and in-kind contributions towards the expo. Amongst others, NamPower pledged N$100 000 while FNB Namibia pledged N$150 000.
FirstRand CEO Sarel van Zyl said the bank was proud to be part of the first expo. Some of the bank’s employees volunteered to be part of the organising committee and provide financial expertise.
Ali Dharani of the Rani Group contributed N$50 000 last month.
In November 2018, Minister Uutoni donated N$2 000 from his own pocket to kick-start the pledges.
