Tutoring in this area is especially important, since it provides similar access to those available elsewhere.

A tutor centre opened in Gobabis recently, providing extra lessons to assist students of the area with homework.

The Omaheke College offers lessons for students from grade 1 to 12 in most subjects, including Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology, Agriculture, Geography, Life Science, Development Studies, Accounting and Business Studies.

“We saw the need to offer tutorials to the learners of Gobabis and not many similar establishments exist yet, so there is a huge learner population,” says Gomotsang Mokaleng of the college.

According to her, tutoring is especially important for the Omaheke region as it gives learners in the area similar access to educational opportunities as those that exist in larger towns like Windhoek. The programme is open for any learner, whether in a government or private school. “We have a team of qualified and experienced tutors in each subject,” she said.

The facility can currently accommodate 30 learners at a time, “but this capacity can easily be exceeded because students attend lessons at various times of the day.”

The classes are attended in groups but no more than 20 students are allowed per class. Fees for grade 12 students are N$200 per subject per month and grade 8 to 10 learners pay N$500 for three subjects per month. Homework assistance for primary school learners costs N$400 a month. A once off registration fee of N$150 is payable.
