Vuil hospitaal hou aan skok

’n Jong ma van die hoofstad moes verlede week haar baba na die Katutura staatshospitaal neem om haar kleintjie vir geelsug te behandel. Daar gekom was dit vir haar duidelik dat higiëne blykbaar geen aandag geniet nie, veral nie in die pediatriese afdeling nie.
“Ek was baie ontsteld toe ek sien hoe vuil die kamer is waarin my dogter en kleindogter moes bly om gesond te word,” vertel me. Susan Morkel oor hul tyd in die hospitaal. Haar suster het foto’s van die haglike omstandighede op sosiale media geplaas en dit het soos ’n veldbrand versprei.
Die foto’s wys ’n verstopde wasbak, ’n gebruikte naald wat hulle op die vloer opgetel het en ’n bad wat lanklaas skoon was. “My dogter het gesê sy sal eerder ’n emmer as die toilet gebruik,” het Morkel gesê en bygevoeg dat haar dogter elke oggend eers huis toe gegaan het om te stort.
“Ek het by die dokter gesoebat om my kleindogter te ontslaan sodat ons haar by die huis kan versorg. Hoe kan hulle in sulke omstandighede gesond word?” wou sy weet.
Beide ma en dogter is Sondag ontslaan. “Maar my dogter is baie neeslagtig na die week in die hospitaal.”

Vieslike toestand
Morkel het in ’n gesprek met die dokter gevra hoe hulle in sulke omstandighede kan werk, maar haar vrae is onbeantwoord gelaat. Die Raad vir Gesondheidsberoepe van Namibië (HPCNA) is gekontak om die probleem aan te meld en hulle is na die regsdepartement verwys. “Daar het die telefone net aanhou lui en daar was ook nog geen reaksie op ons ons epos nie,” het Morkel gesê.
Ná daar herhaaldelik gevra is, het skoonmakers minstens die gang se vloere gewas, “en het die glase in ons kamer darem geblink,” het sy gesê.
“Mense, ons moet ophou verbaas wees. Ons stem jaar in en jaar uit al vir 30 jaar vir hierdie diens,” was een se kommentaar op die foto’s wat op sosiale media verskyn het. ’n Ander wou weet waarvoor belastinggeld gebruik word. Nog iemand was meer proaktief en het voorgestel dat vrywilligers in spanne moet help skoonmaak. “Ons kan die regering in die verband help,” het hy geskryf.
