WHS and WAP bag hockey titles
Windhoek Gymnasium’s astroturf hockey field was left with scuff marks in the blazing sun on Saturday as the final league games for the Namibian Secondary School Union (NSSU) hockey finals took place.A total of five league games were played on Saturday.
The competitive matches included girl team leagues played under the Kom-en-Haal tournament, as well as two male league games played under the Jubber tournament.
Windhoek High School’s first team bagged a national first league win in a fiery game against worthy competitors, St. Paul's, with two points to one. However, St. Paul’s managed to bag the second league title in an equally heated game against Windhoek Gymnasium, where they won by five points to one.
Filled with gratitude
As for the male teams, the Windhoek Afrikaans Privaatskool (WAP) beat Windhoek Gymnasium on their home ground in a close game with two points to one at shootouts as they drew two points by the time the buzzer went off.
"I can only thank my team and God for carrying us through the long league that we had. I am filled with relief and gratitude, but it was really all just God’s doing," said WAP first team captain and goalkeeper, Richter Van Rooyen.
Furthermore, great excitement lies ahead as the tournament continues to grow at an exponential rate, drawing bigger audiences as the years go by.
"It was really great to play hockey again, and we really had a successful hockey season. We are also very excited that two more synthetic turfs are being built in the Erongo Region, which will definitely let hockey grow. We hope to see more regions participate in 2023," said one of the organisers, Bianca Rehder, in an interview with SportWrap.Photo caption:
