Pensioners worried about paying

Municipal services at Groot Aub will be affordable, the Councillor of the Windhoek Rural Constituency, Penina Ita, said after residents expressed doubt that many of them will be able to pay for such services because they are pensioners or unemployed.

This follows after Groot Aub was incorporated into the boundaries of the City of Windhoek (CoW), which means it will now receive water, sewerage, solid waste management, electricity, public transport, emergency services and other services.

Pensioner Jakobus Johannes said that most pensioners live with their grandchildren who they have to support with their monthly pension grants. “It is not enough and with additional municipal services expenses, our lives will be a bit difficult,” he said.

In spite of their misgivings, residents are nonetheless happy that electricity will be cheaper than that currently supplied by the Central North Regional Electricity Distributor.

Groot Aub is home to about 6 000 inhabitants of which most are small-scale farmers and pensioners. – Nampa
