Namibian Impi's take up the challenge
Helené Bam - Leopard-crawling through mud, swimming in murky water and jumping from scaffolding is not everyone’s idea of fun, but for some it is the perfect way to get the blood pumping and adrenaline rushing.Namibia’s first Impi Challenge took place at Heja Game lodge last Saturday. This is an adventure style race that combines trail running with an obstacle course that tests the physical and mental strength and endurance of its competitors.
Although the Impi Challenge is all about fun and adventure, it also makes provision for the more serious athletes with the inclusion of an Elite category. Rykie Jonck was the first female athlete to cross the finish line in the Elite category with Corné Verwey and Amadea Moller claiming second and third positions respectively. Claude Eksteen from South Africa won the male Elite race. Anton Swart came second and Pieter Joubert, also from South Africa, third.
The prize for the best dressed team went to the “A team” and the “Boom Box” team walked away with the honour as being the team with the best spirit of the day.
The organiser, James van der Westhuizen, says that “although there is always room for improvement, the participants enjoyed the day tremendously. We believe that the event was a big success and that it will most definitely be an annual feature on the Namibian sporting calendar.”
