Namibian filmmaker and creative director Othilia Tutu Mungoba is set to premiere The Encapsulation of Bience Gawanas, an experimental documentary exploring the life, legacy and personal journey of one of Namibia’s prominent leaders.

The film, described as an experimental reflective biographical portrait, moves away from a conventional chronological biography. Instead, Mungoba uses archival material, personal artefacts, photographs and pictorials to offer an intimate audiovisual portrait of Gawanas.

According to the filmmaker, the documentary seeks to look beyond Gawanas as a public figure and explore her experiences, values, struggles, convictions and contribution to Namibian society.

The film also aims to preserve an important chapter of Namibia’s social and political history while offering audiences a more personal perspective on Gawanas’ journey. It is being presented as part of Heroes’ Day and Women’s Month awareness activities.

The public screening is scheduled for 28 August at 18:30 at the Thüringer Hof Hotel in Windhoek.

Gawanas will participate in a question-and-answer session following the screening, giving audiences an opportunity to engage with her about her life experiences, leadership journey and the legacy she hopes to leave behind.
