Chief Hijanuga to make European debut
Namibia's first opera, Chief Hijanuga, celebrates its European premiere in Berlin with its debut taking place in the Haus des Rundfunks on 15 September – the first of three performances in the German city.The composer and conductor is Eslon Hindundu, himself Herero, and the German historian and librettist Nikolaus Frei worked under the direction of Kim Mira Meyer to create this opera to explore the common history between Namibia and Germany during the colonial period.
However, this opera not only opens a window into the dark history of the country but also aims to contribute to national understanding.
The premier is part of the cooperation with the Berlin memorial cultural model project “Decolonial memory culture in the city”.
