Free photographic course hosted in the capital

Hosted by Portuguese photographer Carlos Barradas
The Embassy of Portugal in Windhoek in partnership with StArt Art Gallery and the Namibian Arts Association invites Namibian artists, students and interested parties to apply to attend the Photography, History, and Freedom: An Exploration of Historic Moments workshop, presented by the Portuguese photographer Carlos Barradas.
The five-day workshop takes place from 22 to 28 November 2023 at the Namibian Arts Association (122 Robert Mugabe Ave, Windhoek).
This activity is being organised within the framework of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, which is going to take place next year. The Portuguese Carnation Revolution occurred on 25 April 1974, putting an end to the dictatorial regime which had been in place in the country since 1926.
The workshop is free of charge.
This event is funded by Camões, IP, Institute for Cooperation and Language (Portugal).
Concept
The aim of this workshop is to delve into the role of photography in capturing historic moments. With insights from photographers, anthropologists and sociologists, the participants will explore how images shape the understanding of freedom throughout different social, cultural, political, and historical contexts.
With the Carnation Revolution in Portugal as a visual example, and through practical sessions, editing, and exhibition preparation, different narratives on freedom will be created. There are no equipment limitations as the purpose of this workshop is to engage in a visual dialogue, reflecting on ideas about visual culture and production and the very role of images in shaping contemporary culture. Several resources for the attendees will be provided in advance, in the format of videos, eBooks, and an image library.
The workshop will culminate in a thought-provoking exhibition, to be held in 2024, sparking meaningful conversations about freedom and history.
Interested parties must fill out a short application form before 13 November at 17:00. To apply, use this link: https://forms.gle/EV9cJ4RXSKFBrG276. Accepted applicants will be informed via email by 17 November. Participants must commit to the full duration of the workshop and be able to bring their own photographic equipment (cameras and cables). Digital cameras are preferred but in the case that a participant only has a cell phone camera this will suffice. All participants must be over the age of 18.
