German weeks continue
Since 15 September, Namibia has been hosting the German Weeks, a month-long celebration marking 35 years of friendship between Namibia and Germany. The programme is packed with cultural, academic and community events, bringing together people of all ages to explore shared heritage, language, and creativity. Here’s what’s on for the week of 28 September to 3 October:
• 30 September – Felsgraffiti
The spotlight is on literature at the Namibia Scientific Society at 19:00. Felsgraffiti, Namibia’s German-language literary magazine, hosts an evening of readings and music. Please note: the event will be in German only.
• 1 October – Friendship Concert
The German Embassy in Windhoek, together with the People of Song Project, presents a Friendship Concert. This special evening is by invitation only.
• 1 and 2 October – National Dialogue on Urban Issues
Urban development takes centre stage during a national dialogue event under the leadership of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development (MURD), presented by GIZ at NIPAM.
• 2 October – Book reading for children
The Kindergartennetzwerk invites children aged between 3 and 5 and their parents to a reading of “Ein lehrreicher Tag für Strips” at the Bärchenhöhle at 15:00. The story time session will be held in German only, offering young learners an early taste of language and culture.
• 3 to 5 October – German Language Workshops
To round off the week, learners from Deutsche Höhere Privatschule, Delta Secondary School, Namib High School, and UNAM will gather at the scenic Goanikontes oasis. The weekend workshops, hosted by the German Embassy and partner schools, focus on German as a foreign language through an immersive, hands-on experience.
• Panel Discussion (Moved to October)
Originally planned for 29 September, the panel discussion “How German is my Namibian Heritage? How Namibian is my German Heritage?” will now take place on 27 October at 18:00 at the House of Democracy in Windhoek. The event, organised by the UNAM German Section and the Hanns-Seidel Foundation, promises a lively exchange of ideas on cultural identity and belonging.
