The FAME Shorts Film Festival explores diverse narratives, delving into cultural heritage, modern life, diasporic identity, historical events, and socio-political issues. It serves as a platform for personal stories, biographies, artistic expressions, and tales of innovation, spotlighting the intersectionality within African societies. The festival addresses environmental concerns and the evolving relationship between Africans and their land, offering a multifaceted glimpse into the continent’s experiences.
In 2024, the festival introduces five award categories to honour outstanding films:
• Best Documentary Short Film
• Best Narrative Short Film
• Best Student Short Film
• Best Animated Short Film
• Best LGBTQI+ Short Film
As a bastion for independent cinema, FAME Shorts Film Festival emphasizes the discovery and nurturing of the finest independent filmmakers from Africa and its diaspora. It welcomes submissions deeply rooted in African origins, celebrating the continent’s rich and diverse narratives.
Martin Hiller, Portfolio Director for FAME Week Africa, expressed excitement, stating, "The FAME Shorts Film Festival is a celebration of creativity and innovation in short filmmaking. We're eager to witness the unique contributions filmmakers from all backgrounds bring to the table."
In collaboration with MIP Africa, the festival goes beyond screenings, offering filmmakers the chance to engage in content sessions, workshops, and masterclasses from September 2 to 4, 2024. It's an opportunity for learning, growth, and connection with fellow creators.
Hiller added, "We understand the passion and dedication required for short film creation. That's why we're dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for filmmakers to thrive and showcase their talent."
Submissions, with a fee of N$250 per entry, opened 12 February via FilmFreeway.
Important dates & deadlines:

• Submissions Deadline: April 26, 2024
• Notification Date: June 18, 2024
• FAME Shorts Film Festival: September 5th – 7th, 2024
Winners will receive award certificates and laurels, acknowledging their creative contributions to short filmmaking.
