Sixth Triennale launched

Local creativity took centre stage at the official launch of the sixth edition of the Bank Windhoek Triennial, hosted at the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN).
The prestigious art competition aims to promote Namibian visual arts while celebrating local talent and identity.
This year’s Triennial is themed Namibian Identity: The Linework of a Country’s Contours and Wealth and invites artists to explore and express the essence of Namibian culture, history, and societal evolution through visual storytelling.
The competition carries big rewards. The overall winner will walk away with N$50 000 in cash and a solo exhibition at the NAGN, while second and third place winners will receive N$35 000 and N$25 000, respectively. In addition to the financial support, the gallery will mentor the top three artists, providing career development opportunities.
A special category has also been introduced for emerging artists under 35, who will gain access to NAGN’s existing emerging artist development programme.
Speaking at the event, Bank Windhoek’s Bronwyn Moody described the Triennial as a platform where “bold ideas take shape, tradition meets innovation, and the universal language of creativity speaks louder than ever.”
She added that the Triennial serves as a mirror to Namibian society, capturing the country's diverse narratives and aspirations.
Bank Windhoek has been the title sponsor of the Triennial since 2008, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing Namibia’s cultural landscape.
NAGN director Michelle van Wyk said the showcase encourages Namibians to reflect on and express their collective identity. “We must use platforms like this to tell the world who we are and who we are growing into.”
Highlighting inclusivity, NAGN chief curator Ndeenda Shivute-Nakapunda noted that this year’s Triennial actively involves art extension offices across all regions to ensure wider participation and standardisation. “These offices will assist in developing artists’ work and form part of the selection committee.”
Application forms for the 2025 Triennial will be available from Tuesday, 20 May, on the Bank Windhoek website at www.bankwindhoek.com.na.
