Digital banking book review highlights local payment trends
The Bank of Namibia recently hosted a review session of Digital Banking (2nd Edition) by FNB Namibia payments expert Dr Albert Mutonga Matongela. The book offers practical insights into digital banking and payment systems, with a particular focus on Namibia’s evolving financial landscape.Matongela’s work explains how payments underpin core banking functions like deposits, lending, and investments, while illustrating how the shift to digital is reshaping the way money moves. The book covers technologies that enable fast, secure transactions and explores key topics such as fraud awareness, Common Monetary Area payments, debt management, and the transition from cash-based to modern systems.
Unlike many global publications, Digital Banking is grounded in local realities, using relatable Namibian examples to make complex concepts accessible. It fills a knowledge gap in the country’s financial literature, offering value to both professionals and the broader public.
Ester Ngwenya, Senior Analyst at the Bank of Namibia, praised the book's accessibility: “It’s not just for industry experts; it enhances digital literacy. The first edition clarified many concepts for me, and the second builds on that foundation.”
Intern Christiaan Prinsloo echoed this sentiment, saying, “When I joined the payments department, the first edition helped me grasp complex systems and appreciate the infrastructure behind payment networks.”
The release of the second edition comes at a critical time, as Namibia’s financial sector continues to embrace digital transformation, financial inclusion, and innovation. It supports national goals of building a more resilient and tech-enabled economy.
Matongela, who has served at FNB Namibia for 15 years and is currently Manager of Payments, described the book as part of a broader mission: “FNB is committed to creating a strong digital payments ecosystem. This book reflects our efforts to support customers and contribute to Namibia’s economic growth.”
