Affordable housing solutions for the masses
The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN), in collaboration with Alternative Building Technology (ABT), is spearheading new approaches to address the nation’s housing shortage.
ABT, an 80 per cent Namibian-owned company, has committed to supporting the government’s goal of delivering 50 000 housing units by the end of the current administration.
ABT director Medusalem Shilongo said the company was formed through a joint venture with technical partners from Botswana and South Africa, bringing solutions that have been successfully implemented in neighbouring countries. “Our aim is not just business. We are here to improve living conditions and provide sustainable, quality housing for our people,” he said.
The partnership has focused on creating affordable homes using alternative building materials. The demonstration house, built in collaboration with SDFN, was completed in just two days, showcasing an innovative approach that is both efficient and durable.
Shilongo emphasised the benefits of the construction method, noting that the houses provide comfortable living conditions without the need for additional heating or cooling appliances, making them particularly suitable for low-income households.
In addition to rapid construction, ABT’s approach creates employment opportunities, as local workers are engaged in building the homes and, in future, in producing the necessary building materials locally.
Matt Phuti from ABT South Africa said their solution goes beyond providing houses, as it will also create employment opportunities through plans to establish a factory in Namibia. This dual impact, according to Phuti, addresses both housing shortages and economic empowerment.
Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa, speaking during the handover of the house a week ago in Okahandja Park, called on local authorities to make land available for housing development. Sankwasa also thanked SDFN for partnering with ABT.
With ABT’s innovative construction technology, Namibia is set to take a significant step towards meeting its affordable housing targets while improving the quality of life for its citizens. – [email protected]
