Impact Tank transforms waste

In the world of social entrepreneurship, Impact Tank has emerged as a leading player and was recently announced in the top 5 of the Capricorn Foundation’s Food Waste Challenge.
Impact Tank is a social venture builder that focuses on nurturing ideas and transforming them into successful businesses.
Sean Makoena said that they entered the challenge to highlight their three thematic areas: emerging technology, indigenous knowledge, and the green economy. “Making the top 5 is a testament to our commitment and vision. Our participation not only showcases our ability to address critical social and environmental issues but also highlights our potential for long-term impact.”
The team proposes to collect food waste at homes. “Sixty per cent of all food waste occurs at household level,” he said. After collection, it will be turned into compost. The compost will then be sold to the Namibian market, and can lead to soil improvement and better crops in the future.
According to Makoena, the significance of competitions like the Food Waste Challenge cannot be underestimated, especially for private businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs. “It provides a platform for entrepreneurs to put our ideas to the test and evaluate feasibility. It is through these platforms that entrepreneurs can fine-tune their concepts, understand the intricacies involved, and determine if their ideas can truly work in practice. Moreover, the exposure gained through competitions helps entrepreneurs gain visibility, connect with like-minded individuals, and attract potential investors and collaborators.”
The winner of this year’s Capricorn Foundation Food Waste Challenge will be announced on 13 July.
