Digital leap for Parkies
Capricorn Group and Bank Windhoek have donated computer equipment to Pionierspark Primary School to support the expansion of its computer and science laboratories, helping strengthen digital skills among learners and teachers.
The donation includes pre-owned desktop computers, monitors and Cisco networking equipment previously used in the Group’s operations. The equipment follows a request from the school, which is expanding its laboratory facilities to provide learners with greater access to technology-based learning.
Speaking at the handover, Deputy Director in the Directorate of Education, Hoster Simasiku, said the partnership demonstrated the importance of collaboration in addressing Namibia’s digital skills gap. “Don’t stop here. You did not only donate, but you empowered the teachers,” he said.
Simasiku said improving teachers’ digital skills was essential to ensuring learners benefit fully from technology in the classroom. “If you empower teachers to empower children, these children are fast learners and will soon reach the highest level,” he said.
He added that information and communication technology remained a critical area requiring attention in the education sector, as many teachers still relied mainly on traditional teaching methods. “When you look at the core skills that we need most as teachers and learners, it is ICT. The world has moved.”
Simasiku praised the choice of Pionierspark Primary School as a beneficiary, saying the donation would benefit both learners and educators.
Representing Capricorn Group, Victoria Möller said the donation reflected the company’s purpose of being “Connectors of Positive Change”.
“A learner does not need the newest machine to learn. A learner needs a machine,” she said, adding that access to technology helps build confidence and opens new opportunities.
Möller noted that the equipment was pre-owned and transferred on an “as is” basis, with some units requiring maintenance. She said reusing functional equipment also supports the Group’s environmental commitments by extending the lifespan of assets and reducing electronic waste.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts to support education, sustainability and digital inclusion in Namibian communities.
