A groundbreaking partnership between the Business College of Athens (BCA) and the South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) is revolutionizing maritime education for African professionals. Through this collaboration, African maritime enthusiasts can pursue internationally recognized maritime qualifications online, either full-time or part-time.
The inaugural cohort, comprising maritime professionals and seafarers from South Africa, Namibia, and Angola, commenced their studies in February 2024. BCA, established in 1971, pioneers specialised maritime studies and is delighted to extend its offerings to African maritime professionals.
Harris Daskalakis of BCA is excited about the partnership with SAMTRA, emphasising the prospect of enhancing maritime careers. The online courses feature comprehensive support, including inductions, video interactions, modules, 24/7 assistance, and mentorship until jointly awarded by the University of West London and BCA College.
With intakes in February, June, and October, BCA also provides bursaries to qualified applicants, like Sivuyile Fisa, an accomplished Second Engineer. Fisa, a recipient of the bursary, speaks eagerly about pursuing his MSc in Marine Engineering Management over two years while working at sea. He anticipates the qualification to broaden his career horizons and deepen his expertise.
Pieter Coetzer of SAMTRA highlights the flexibility of online learning, tailored to accommodate work commitments. The courses are ideal for industry professionals seeking to enhance their skills or individuals aspiring to enter the maritime sector.
The qualification, jointly conferred by the University of West London and BCA, holds significant global recognition, opening doors for career advancement worldwide. With Greece boasting the world's largest shipping fleet, opportunities for employment in the maritime industry abound, further enhancing the appeal of these courses to African students.
