Prof Gideon officially at the NUST helm
Professor Frednard Gideon has officially assumed office as Vice-Chancellor of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), following his appointment by the university’s Council earlier this year.
Gideon took up the position on 1 August 2026 in accordance with a Council resolution announced on 29 April 2026.
With more than 25 years of experience in higher education, including 17 years in academic leadership and 11 years in executive management at the University of Namibia (UNAM), Gideon brings extensive experience in university governance, strategic planning, research development, academic administration and stakeholder engagement.
NUST said his leadership approach is focused on academic excellence, institutional transformation, research, innovation, digital transformation and building strategic partnerships that contribute to society.
Gideon holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Mathematics, a Master of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Milestone
The university’s Council described his appointment as a milestone in NUST’s development and said it comes at a critical time as the institution begins implementing its Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP) 2026–2030.
The plan aims to drive institutional transformation, strengthen academic excellence, expand research and innovation, improve graduate employability and increase NUST’s contribution to Namibia’s socio-economic development.
Under the strategic framework, NUST will focus on expanding access to quality higher education, strengthening entrepreneurship and innovation, growing international partnerships and developing solutions to national, regional and global challenges.
The university said it would continue consolidating its position as Namibia’s leading institution of applied science and technology by providing future-focused education and producing graduates equipped with industry-relevant skills.
NUST Council Chairperson Dr Leake Hangala said the Council was confident that Gideon’s leadership would help strengthen the university’s culture of excellence and innovation.
“Under Prof Gideon’s leadership, NUST will continue to build on its strong institutional foundations, foster a culture of excellence and innovation and strengthen its role as a leading university of science and technology in Africa,” Hangala said.
The Council has called on stakeholders, partners and the wider community to support Gideon as he leads NUST into a new phase focused on applied science, research, innovation and global engagement.
